Deconstructing White Supremacy for Change Leaders
“We can’t challenge our racial filters if we can’t consider the possibility that we have them.”
Robin DiAngelo, author of White Fragility
What is White Supremacy? It is a term used to describe White culture as a privileged force in society. It is the idea that white people and the ideas, thoughts, beliefs, and actions of white people are superior to People of Color and their ideas, thoughts, beliefs, and actions. It derives from Critical Whiteness Studies (CWS), a field of scholarship whose aim is to reveal the invisible structures that produce and reproduce white supremacy and privilege. This artificial construction binds together a system that benefits and privileges white or white passing people, particularly in Western societies such as North America and Europe. It is so enmeshed and normalized that those who benefit from it, usually cannot even see it. To the extent that White Supremacy is not interrupted, these norms and assumptions are transmitted to the next generation, thus perpetuating the cycle. It takes active effort to disrupt it, but first, we need to name it and identify how it plays out in the many roles we play in our communities and organizations.
About. This cohort-based learning experience is designed to support change leaders and practitioners with the tools and guidance to unpack and disrupt the forces shaped by the cultural characteristics of White Supremacy that are embedded in institutions and organizations.
The 3-part learning experience will include facilitator-led virtual session, self-guided reflection, group conversations, peer-learning and fieldwork. The content will introduce how White Supremacy and White Privilege operate and how the system is maintained, even by well-meaning people. Participants will have the opportunity to build their own toolkit of resources to identify the concepts individually and practice ways to dismantle the forces of White Supremacy culture that may show up in their day-to-day reality.
